The "Downer"

The “Downer”, a term I apply to those in or outside of a tribe that always point out the negative in any situation.  You know, you probably have a few in your groups.  This “role” if you would, never provides positive feedback; quick to tear down.  Many times I have witnessed this activity because the person has failed in that area, gave up trying, and feels no one should make it past him; stuck in the pit as shown in the picture.  Maybe, if I’m down in this pit – I will drag everyone down into the pit.

This person finds a weak point, ignores the strengths, and keeps grinding that point.  Instead of offering ways to limit the weakness, makes the weakness appear as a “critical” element.  Instead of using the positive, the value, to escape his/her pit, has their blinders on to pull everyone in even at the expense of remaining in the pit themselves.

I’ve tried a few ways to approach this type of person, yet many have not worked.  My willingness to help always kicks in and I find myself being dragged towards the pit.  Recognize this role, escape the pit, and don’t let others drag you into the pit.

Thank You for listening.
